Writing your mission statement the second time — Should startups care?

Should a startup have a Purpose, Mission, and Value statement?
Is it worthless at such an early stage?

I know in the early days of Social Pinpoint we found it really hard to articulate our Why?

But then yesterday, after attending the Sydney Salesforce World Tour and meeting with a few investors/partners about Userlot, my view on our purpose and mission just fell out!

I woke up this morning with my usual busy brain buzzing and everything we’d been talking about for months just felt like it came together.

And it seems most of our team resonates (which is a great sign 🪧)

Our Purpose

Life is supposed to be lived not worked.

Freedom comes from ensuring work life is balanced, systemized, and profitable — providing the platform to live your life creatively, enjoyably, affluently, and socially.

Finish by four.

Our Mission

At Userlot, we are passionate about putting Customer Success back to where it belongs — at the forefront of the entire company.

We don’t believe it is a single department!

Our mission is to ensure all SAAS providers of any size have the ability to proactively manage customers through the entire lifecycle of the journey on their platform — driving business growth through strong and expanding recurring revenue.

Our Values

  • We decide what we do — We have a mission and purpose and understand our market. We decide what we build and when. We pull the industry forward.
  • Open and Transparent — We don’t work in isolation. We work openly and collaboratively. Getting feedback often, and fast.
  • Production over Perfection — We get shit done! This isn’t about doing more but shipping to production safely over waiting for perfection. Our clients are our best source of feedback.
  • Solutions not Problems — We don’t complain, we solve. We never say, “it’s not my job”. We are a team and we come up with solutions.
  • Play well with others — Our competitors are a blessing. They reduce our marketing costs and educate our clients. We don’t fixate on what they do, but on what we do — See Value 1

I like to think it’s because we know so much about this space, but it’s more than that.

It’s seeing what worked, and what didn’t!

It’s the years of experience you can’t get when you first start out.

It’s part of your moat — that separates you from the competition.

It’s what you would still do and aim for, even if the current version of your product goes away.

So how do they feel to you?

Would you work for a company that lived and breathes these values, this mission, towards this purpose?

Love any feedback
